Faith the Size of a Mustard Seed
In this Sunday’s Gospel, the apostles Faith the Size of a Mustard Seedsincerely request that Jesus increase their faith! How often have we prayed the same thing ourselves? We face challenges in life, questions we don’t know how to answer, struggles that seem too heavy to carry, and we long for a deeper, stronger faith to see us through.
Jesus’ reply is both encouraging and humbling. He tells the apostles that even faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. In other words, it’s not about how much faith we think we have, but about whether we are willing to place our trust, however small, in God. When entrusted to the Lord, the tiniest seed of faith can bear fruit far beyond what we imagine.
This is good news for all of us because most of us do not feel like “spiritual giants.” We struggle, doubt, and sometimes fail to pray as we should or to love as fully as we could. But the Lord does not ask us for perfect faith. He simply asks us to begin with what little we have. He can do the rest.
Jesus speaks about servants doing their duty, reminding us that discipleship is not about earning praise or rewards. Our faith grows not by looking for recognition, but by quietly and humbly living the Gospel daily, serving others, forgiving, showing kindness, and putting God first in our lives.
This week, I invite you to consider where to plant your “mustard seed” of faith. Maybe it’s offering a small prayer when you’re worried, choosing patience in a difficult moment, or lending a hand to someone in need. These may feel like little things, but they are influential acts of faith in God's hands.
So, let us echo the apostles’ prayer: “Lord, increase our faith.” And may we never forget that even the smallest seed, when given to Him, can grow into something beautiful.
